The Amish Project. One Young Man’s Experiment to unplug from Social Media.

Sadly I think my generation, generation X was the last generation to grow up without Social Media. The internet was born in 1989, the same year I graduated from High School. A few years later the first truly mobile phones came out along with text messaging. AOL followed in 1995, which was the first social media platform, followed by Windows 95.

Here you find a young man who cuts himself off from technology for 90 days. He almost gets a feeling of what is was like to grow up without social media. Only thing is, everyone else is using social media so it literally took him quite a while to get people to notice he had dropped off the grid.

This young man also realizes that most of his online relationships are superficial. One of the reasons why bloggers prefer to blog. Building a community of people who take the time to read what you write is amazing, especially if you’re connecting with people from far away places who have the same interests.

So… did you grow up in a period where there was no social media and if so, does social media make you more or less social? Leave your comments below. Or you could always snail mail me. 😉
