I’m not asking everyone to delete their account or question their morality. Let’s just be honest with what’s happening here. Facebook wants to become the Internet.
Another interesting article in the Washington Post. Facebook reminds me of AOL. AOL also wanted to be “the internet”. AOL was actually known as a walled internet and it took a while for newbies to the internet to realize there was a much more vibrant internet outside those walls.
AOL started in 1985 and by 2002 AOL’s powerful brand and unrivaled global member base of 34 million had started to see its once stratospheric subscriber growth slow, its ad revenue fall and its international operations bleed money. It took 17 years.
Facebook is 12 years old and they may have peaked. Many people have curbed their sharing on “the facebook” by half and others, like myself, go on maybe once a week and never post anything.
Users have gravitated over to Instagram (Also owned by Facebook) and WhatsApp (also owned by Facebook) in an attempt to… leave Facebook?
