US Government Creates Cuban Twitter, How Nice of Them

Another late night of catching up on the latest news in the tech world and I come across this story. It got a little attention in some tech communities but somehow I missed it. When you put this story together with some of the other story’s going on in the world, it’s a pretty big story…

I was just catching up on this story about how the US Government setup a “Twitter” type of social media platform in Cuba. The project, dubbed “ZunZuneo,” slang for a Cuban hummingbird’s tweet, was publicly launched shortly after the 2009 arrest in Cuba of American contractor Alan Gross. He was imprisoned after traveling repeatedly to the country on a separate, clandestine USAID mission to expand Internet access using sensitive technology that only governments use. NYPost

After watching the above posted video and many others like it, It’s blowing my mind how the US Government is blatantly using social media to stir up dissent in other countries. Makes one wonder if our Government is setting up these same types of services right here in our own backyard.

nsa1On the other hand, why would they need to do this? It has been known for quite a while that the US Government, through the NSA, has complete backdoor access to almost every major social media network, nearly complete access to everyone’s iPhones as well as the ability to masquerade as a Facebook server. But you already knew that. Right?

You can read a lot more here at one of my favorite independent blogs, Storm Clouds Gathering regarding the U.S. Government’s latest attempt to topple Cuba using social media, and they state it’s just the tip of the iceberg, but what’s really interesting is how it connects to the Ukrainian crisis.

“As shocking and absurd as these revelations may be to the general public, the truth of the matter is that this is just the tip of the iceberg. The U.S. government and its allies have been using the internet as a covert weapon for some time now. Much of the evidence of these activities got mainstream coverage, but the corporate media is very careful not to refer to that evidence in the context of current events.”

And then the blog, Storm Clouds Gathering, goes on to connect the dots on how Washington and its Allies use Social Media to Topple Governments & Manipulate Public Opinion. As an avid twitter user, I know you get enough social media savvy people together and you can get some key #hashtags trending. If the government is doing this they could very easily manipulate public opinion via social media the same way our current news system does to the general population.

Right now the government can control the message over the mainstream corporate media. They are working real hard to get control over social media so use those social media accounts carefully. Especially with all those new texting platforms out there you never know if that next best social media platform you are signing up for is the US Government trying to cause trouble.
