I had something else I wanted to post this morning but I opted for this little blog posting instead because Marketing on Social Media is more than just Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and any other free platform you can get yourself on. If you’re not blogging or at the very least have a mobile optimized website you are ignoring the rest of the internet at your own risk…
Here Are Some Numbers
This morning I’m posting up early numbers from a site I manage. Especially on a Sunday Morning, Reddit is trending and will send a lot of traffic to this particular site. Reddit will most likely send more traffic then Yelp but it’s still very early. When your site starts to have traffic driven from Reddit it tends to go far.
I love Reddit and check it often for real, unedited information. It’s Google+ with the vibrant community I’m looking for. Most Business’s have never heard of Reddit. Here’s your intro…
What is Reddit?
Reddit is essentially a Bulletin Board system and has long been considered the “Front Page of the Internet”. Reddit entries are organized into areas of interest called “reddits”. Historically, the front page was the main reddit, and other areas were “subreddits”. Reddit is an incredibly useful place to find trending information.
Depending on the type of business you are in this is very important. If you are a Restaurant, The Reddit community has been known to socialise at local parks and bars around the world, and there are many localised reddits for local meetings. Betcha didn’t know that.
Some History of Reddit
Reddit was founded in 2005 and was available to the public about a year before Facebook was opened up to the public in September of 2006. On June 18, 2008, Reddit became an open source project. With the exception of the anti-spam/cheating portions, all of the code and libraries written for Reddit became freely available on Github.
So, I don’t expect everyone to jump on Reddit this morning just because I write about it and it’s also not the latest and greatest social media network but to not know about them will point out an obvious flaw in your social media cred.
