This Kicks off the Long Island Summer….

I was not able to get out and see the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Jones Beach Airshow this weekend but you can bet some local Long Islanders did get some shots and posted them to Flickr.

This year the Blue Angels were grounded. My personal favorite, the F-22 Raptor, was pulled at the last minute but local favorites like the Iron Eagles, Geico Skytypers and the Army’s Golden Knight’s Team were still on hand for a great show.

Here is one of my favorite pics from fellow twitterer, Tony Vota, Captured with a Nikon D7000. It’s really hard to get shots like these, especially with such fast moving objects, so check out the whole photoset. Most of the planes in the show are represented and came out great.

I will soon be getting the Canon Rebel T3/2i so will hopefully be a pro photographer in the near future too!

Just out of interest, is the carousel plugin at the top of your homepage a plugin or custom coded? I really want something similar to that on one of my sites but have only been able to find rather simplistic or bug ridden choices!

The Carousel is custom coded into the theme. That’s usually the best way to go. Avoid plugins whenever you can.

Great post David. Thanks for featuring my photo. Although the Blue Angels are temporarily grounded as they regroup under a new Leader (after last week’s “near incident”), they weren’t actually scheduled to be here this year. Neither the Blue Angels nor The Thunderbirds were scheduled for this year.

Taking photos at the Air Show has become an annual Memorial Day Tradition for me now for the past few years. Without the headliner Jet Teams, I found I focused more on the smaller propeller planes this year.

My approach has been to go to Jones Beach on the Friday practice day to avoid the crowds and then go to Republic Airport on Sat or Sun and get some of the take-off and landing shots there. Friday practice got a late start by 2-1/2 hours or so because of the morning fog at the beach – and some performers were skipped (No Army Golden Knights) or had shorter practice runs. I waited it out and was rewarded for my patience. Advice: “Wear sunscreen on the tops of your feet!”

I hope you all enjoy my photos on Flickr. If anyone else wants to use them – please contact me and I will set them up for Creative Commons sharing as I did hear for David. – Tony

So there were no Jet Stunt teams headlining this show? I guess Long Island doesn’t rate anymore. ;) I even missed my personal favorite, the Red Bull jet and of course the Raptor.
