Ramadan 101 – A Monthlong Observance That Starts Today.

It’s times like this I benefit from publishing my blog. It’s a learning experience, not just the technical aspect of blogging but when researching topics I want to share I inevitably advance my education. This is definitely one of those times where I am obviously not an expert on the subject of  Islam and the observance of Ramadan, which starts today, but use the Internet to expand my understanding of this religious observance. Ramadan is a month long which gives me a month to expand my knowledge base on this topic.

As a non-practicing Christian, growing up going to a church run school, spending summers in “Bible Day Camps” and attending church weekly, I am very well versed in the Christian religion. I stopped practicing religion when I became an adult possibly due to burnout. As a kid there was just too much religion in my life. I still do appreciate organized religion and how religion gives a person a good moral foundation to build on, and I can’t help but notice the similarities between Islam and Christianity.

There is this perception that the two religions are radically different but in fact the two religions are very similar and I hope everyone does a little bit of research on their own to develop an increased understanding of Islam. Here’s a start to your research:

As of 2009 there are a total of over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, only 0.6% reside in the U.S. Understandably we would not know too much about Islam as there is not much exposure to the Islamic religion on this side of the world.

Check out that last link. This is a big month for the Islamic world, a month I would like to use to get to understand the other half of the world. Of course I include a related link to YouTube, one of the many places I go to get information as well as the “Carnegie Endowment for International Peace“,  a think tank website for some of my basic fact checking. Happy Ramadan!
